Pros and cons of The Walrus app for iPhone and iPad
The Walrus app good for
Great to see The Walrus here. Needs landscape! Couple page turning bugs but a solid first effort!
The Walrus content and layout is as fantastic as usual, but the insane magazine size (250MB for text and a few images?!?) and very sluggish performance of their app is really frustrating.
This is by far the best reading experience youre going to get on the iPad. The content is great. Theres not a massive amount, but the quality is outstanding. The iPhone application is not so great but really Im not going to read a magazine on the iPhone anyways. But its strange, the application itself supports the iPhone 5 screen but the magazine content is letter boxed. However, the screenshots are the same aspect ratio. Oh well. Its still great.
Great mag, app works well for most part except for one month when it failed to authorize my subscription.
Some bad moments
What is described on the website in terms of how to install bears no resemblance to what I see on my iPod Touch 4. If I tap on the screen after opening the app, I do NOT get an Activate popup, I get nothing. There is a myaccount link, but if I tap it the results are useless. First I got prompts for my subscription number and postal code, but when I clicked Go the spinner rotated and suddenly I was kicked over to the download field. When I tried to download the issue, about 1/4 through the download (sometimes even sooner) I got an error saying the server connection was broken. Re-starting, the download begins again from scratch, loads a megabtye or so of the isseu, then freezes and I get another error message. Then if I go back to my account I get a message telling me that "the request timed out."
All of the above is happening on my home wifi network; my iPod is telling me I have maximum signal strength.
This app is a piece of absolute CRAP. Please fix it. I have also reported this by email to the link on The Walrus website.
I paid for a subscription, and it shows in my screen that I am subscribed until April 2014. However I cannot open the issues, I could only open an old one that can only be read in one direction of the screen and the letters cannot be enlarged (both important issues to have it as an e-subscription) I feel Ive been had.
Im torn here. The Walrus is one of Canadas finest magazines. Too bad it doesnt work very well with this app. My subscription disappeared with the new iOS and my back issues are no more. I also have problems with the magazine freezing on the title page.
I miss The Walrus.
Michael
The Walrus Magazines content on paper or in a screen is, as ever, excellent. This digital iteration, however, doesnt avail itself of digital features. That said, I review digital magazines professionally and daily discover glitches or broken apps and always report the issue to the distributor or publisher both corporate (i.e. Conde Nast, Heart) and independent (i.e. The Nation, The Atlantic) and both are notoriously unresponsive. The Walrus is a happy exception. I found a technical issue in the app recently. I requested support, received an email reply within 12 hours and the problem was rectified in days. Well done!!
